作者序

　　首先感謝貴社的韋佑編輯及團隊，在筆者撰寫過程中耐心地引導及給予建議。

　　俗語說：「學習一個新的語言就能打開一個全新的世界」。而歐洲中世紀早期的查理曼大帝曾說：「擁有另一種語言即擁有第二個靈魂」。翻譯的過程，不只牽涉詞彙和文法句型的轉換，也常常需要考慮文化、邏輯、情境等差異。此書除了主題式的單字與翻譯練習，協助讀者打下基本功，也透過包羅萬象的展覽話題，營造各式情境，協助讀者建立背景知識並體會翻譯是全面性的思維轉換，就好像在兩個世界間流轉。

　　寫作過程中，筆者不自覺地想起英國客體關係理論大師溫尼考特（D. W. Winnicott）提出的潛能空間（potential space）觀念。每個單元都是不同的潛能空間，邀請讀者進入這空間，不只加強英語力，也加強翻譯力。

A product development manager is giving a presentation on innovative building materials.

Hello, everyone, welcome to the presentation on innovative building materials. I am going to introduce four materials, translucent concrete, smart tiles, carbon fiber and paper insulation, and there will be time for questions at the end of my presentation.

First, have you ever felt pressured by the confinement of concrete walls? Or have you hoped that there is more natural lighting in your residence? Well, translucent concrete has been commercialized to offer solutions to the problems I just raised. As the word “translucent” suggests, light will shine through walls made of this kind of concrete. It is translucent because glass fiber strands are integrated into the material, and don’t worry about the issue of stability. The glass fiber strands account for only four percent of the composite.

The next material I’d like to talk about is smart tiles. Smart tiles serve both safety and decoration purposes. Just like the first material, the unique property of smart tiles is based on the variation of concrete composite. The concrete of these tiles is mixed with acrylic fiber-optic channels, and the tiles flicker following your footsteps.
