Cataloguing the world’s largest collection of works by Suzuki Harunchu (1725-70), held by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has been a labor of love for over 40 years. The fruits of these
efforts were first published in 1978. This revised edition comprises two volumes. The first contains the text, which consists of descriptions of 721 prints accompanied by tiny b&w thumbnail
images, along with indexing, a glossary, lists of institutional and private collections, and bibliographies--of books by Harunobu, pre-modern Japanese publications, and modern publications in
Japanese and other languages. Waterhouse provides a lengthy introduction in which he sets the context, explains the dating of prints, and summarizes previous studies. The second volume contains
the plates, showcasing the prints themselves in sizes big enough for appreciation. Annotation ©2014 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
