This reprint from 1999 brings together writings by Khantzian (psychiatry, Harvard Medical School), one of the major psychodynamic theorists of addiction during the second half of the twentieth
century. Writing from a psychodynamic perspective, he focuses on the mind and human processes of drug and alcohol addiction. He examines the internal world of the addicted person, the
self-medication hypothesis of substance use disorders, understanding addictive vulnerability, and treatment. Some of the writings are in collaboration with other psychiatrists and
psychologists. All but three of the chapters have been previously published in books or journals, although some have been condensed. They are presented in chronological order in each section.
The three new ones discuss posttraumatic stress disorder and individual and group psychotherapy. The book is intended for students, clinicians, and patients and their families. Annotation 穢2007
