Analyzing the broad corpus of films produced under the auspices of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) from its founding in 1939 to 1946, Khouri (film, U. of Calgary, Canada) explores the
extent to which the political discourse of the Communist Party of Canada and its Popular Front policy influenced the depiction of the Canadian working class for Canadian film audiences. He also
charts the institutional and political dynamics that shaped the parameters within which NFB filmmakers worked. He finds that during the period 1942-1945 NFB films reflected the
counter-hegemonic perspective of the Communist Party and identifies a major political shift beginning in 1945 in the depiction of working class issues. Distributed in the US by Michigan State
