"Laduma!" is a Zulu word used by soccer commentators at goals; it means "to thunder" or "to be famous." Here, Alegi (history, Eastern Kentucky U.) shows that soccer, a game brought by colonists
to South Africa, became an expression of black identity. His descriptions demonstrate soccer's influence in changes in the definition of masculinity, challenges to white authorities,
distinctions of class, divisions amongst generations, regional affiliation and mobilization, and even political organization. He also traces these results back to their inspirations in
traditional sports and gaming rituals and examines how elements that predated the colonials influenced the way South Africans play soccer and interpret society with and through it. Distributed
