Reyfman offers an in-depth study of writers amongst the Russian nobility, such as Pushkin, during the eighteenth century. The book provides an examination of the Table of Ranks, a list of the
positions of noblemen serving the emperor and state, and the writers who served, as well as topics such as the rise of the book market, professionalism in commerce, institutions such as
literary societies, and the patronage system. Reyfman includes an appendix containing a simplified Table of Ranks that reflects the most significant changes introduced between 1722 and 1917.
