This study investigates the role of translation in modern Russian literature as a way to delve into issues of translation in literary and cultural studies. Major themes are the relationships
between Russian translation, Russia’s identity as an imperial nation, and Russia’s modern nation-building project. Some topics dealt with include poet-translators in the age of the Decembrists,
translator-heroines in Russian women’s writing, (mis)translating empire in Lermontov’s Hero of Our Time and Roziner’s A Certain Finkelmeyer, and reading Wilde in Moscow and translations of
