The image of Jesus suspended between the earth and eternal life is at once simple and remarkably adaptable and complex, state the editors in their introduction. The impetus for this volume came
from a 2011 symposium organized by the editors at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, which was linked to an exhibition at the Museum of Biblical Art titled ＂Passion in Venice:
Crivelli to Tintoretto and Veronese; The Man of Sorrows in Venetian Art.＂ Five of the ten contributions are based on symposium presentations; the other five (three invited and two by the
editors) extend the topic beyond the focus on Venice. Most but not all the contributors are art historians. The book includes an abundance of b&w images supporting the text. Annotation
