EzzelArab (economics, American U., Egypt) examines the economic programs proposed by Egyptian nationalist owners of capital in response to the encroachment of European capital in the 19th
century, programs closely associated with the ’Urabi revolt and the subsequent British occupation of Egypt. He argues that a coherent, if unimplemented, programs of economic nationalism arose
alongside other forms of nationalism and that they included calls for a national bank. He distinguishes between the different programs called for among the landholding elites, capital-holding
