This anthology offers both full texts and excerpts in chronological sections grouped by region. In addition to what is traditionally thought of as literature, the book also includes letters and
documents, Patriot and Loyalist songs and ballads, and journals and speeches from the Revolutionary period. The anthology begins with indigenous literary traditions in the form of creation
legends, ritual song and poetry, and ceremonies, and continues an emphasis on indigenous literary traditions with material on Native American political texts and oratory and a focus section on
the tribes of Northern New York. Numerous focus sections, each about 10 pages, present multiple excerpts from different authors, grouped in thematic and chronological sections such as American
encounters with other cultures. The book includes a section of color and b&w historical illustrations, plus photos of artifacts and art. A companion web site offers multimedia resources
centered on the 30 most commonly taught readings in the book. Each of these 30 readings comes with quizzes, audio and video content, web links, author biographies, and glossary flashcards.
There is also a blog for teachers, discussing pedagogical choices, plus an online instructor’s manual. This seventh edition contains 176 new works across all five volumes of the anthology.
