This collection presents papers in facsimile, six each by Mirrlees (b.1936), Vickrey (1914-96), Akerlof (b. 1940), Spence (b.1943), and Stiglitz (b.1943), along with an introductory essay for
each individual; it is volume 6 of the publisher's series, The Pioneering Papers of the Nobel Memorial Laureates in Economics. A sampling of topics: optimum income taxation, the economics of
carrots and sticks, averaging of income for income tax purposes, revising New York's subway fare structure, unemployment and a theory of social custom, labor contracts, wage and price inertia
in the a model of the business cycle, oligopolistic pricing, the informational structure of markets, incentives and risk sharing in sharecropping, and credit rationing. Selections were
originally published in such sources as Review of Economic Studies, J. of Economic Theory, American Economic Review, and Quarterly J. of Economics. Each volume in the series is devoted to
economists whose work is in the same broad area--groupings which involved editorial decision-making and some personal judgment when subject areas overlapped. There's no attempt to achieve
comprehensiveness with regard to the work of each Laureate or with regard to the subject matter; generally, not more than six papers are presented for each individual, and none are repeated
within the series. Economists Vane and Mulhearn (both: Liverpool John Moores U., UK) have taken on the editorial task of selecting pioneering papers, arranging the material, and setting the
work in context with introductory essays. The contents are not indexed. Annotation 穢2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
