Editor Hanlin (emeritus, German, U. of Arkansas) and nine contributors provide an anthology containing critical analysis and general discussion of a cross section of writers of modern Austrian literature. The authors of poetry, drama, novels, and short stories were selected from the Austrian provinces outside Vienna. The book treats their approaches and subject matter, as well as generational and environmental influences that have affected their work and their perceptions of provincial Austria.
