Drake (1882-1964) McColl (1874-1931) were both residents of Bennettsville, South Carolina, where he father was a bank president and hers a the clerk of the county court. Their correspondence
during a year of courting reveal that she, just graduated from college, had many of the same fears as similar women a century later that marriage would prevent her from pursuing a career.
Through the anxieties experienced and ultimately resolved by Drake and McColl at the start of their long and happy union, we learn much about the complex nature of romance, courtship, and
marriage in the south at the turn of the century. South Carolina historian Suzanne Cameron Linder Hurley edits the collection. Annotation 穢2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
