Von Eyben (ESL, Pasadena City College) explores the work of Danish author Karin Michaëlis (1872-1950), including the novels Justine , Bogen om Kaerlighed (The Book about Love), 30 Dages Laan
(The 30-Day Loan), and Lillemor (Little Mother). She identifies a number of themes in Michaëlis’ writing: the way in which female sexuality is lived out, the conflict between socially-
prescribed behavior and the way the individual woman either chooses to or is forced to respond, female masochism and self-destructiveness, incest as a metaphor for patriarchal abuse, and the
cold, evil, "bad" mother. Annotation (c) Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
