This collection demonstrates that for Latin American artists the Shakespearean legacy is available for co-optation not only through parody, adaptation, and reverent and irreverent recreation but also through absorption into unique indigenous genres. The essays address topics from the 19th century to the present, covering high- to low-brow stories, plays and films in Latin America and US barrios. Eleven of the 15 essays focus on performance. The specially commissioned bibliography by Josee Ramon Diaz Fernandez also reflects an interest in performance. The Smythe sewn binding, increasingly rare, is particularly welcome.
