Queering the Shakespeare Film: Gender Trouble, Gay Spectatorship and Male Homoeroticism

This study applies concepts of queer theory to analyze representations of queerness, male homoeroticism, and alternative sexualities in film productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, Twelfth Night, and The Merchant of Venice. Subjects explored include the queer director and masculinity and sodomy in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Directors discussed include Trevor Nunn, Baz Luhrmann, Michael Hoffman, and Michael Radford.
