Georgios Chortatsis (Fl. 1576-1596): Plays of the Veneto-Cretan Renaissance : Texts and Translations

Chortatsis (1575-1600) lived in the golden years of the Venetian occupation of Crete, before the Ottoman invasion. He is only now being recognized as the Cretan Dante. This new edition of his known and supposed plays reveals the originality of his works, their philosophical conception, human warmth, psychology, lyricality, and bawdiness. Bancroft-Marcus presents the plays--including Erophile, Panoria, Katzourbos and Stathis, in addition to a dozen playlets adapted from Tasso's Gerusalemme liberata and Anguillara's Metamorfosi d'Ovido--in parallel Greek and English translation.
