Hassel says he has tried to include all the words in Shakespeare with any religious nuance but tried not to dwell too long on the most obvious, and includes biblical and liturgical allusions only when the word takes on religious significance largely through that allusion. He generally does not include mythological or merely moral words or words pertaining to popular superstition unless there is some compelling religious dimension to the usage. Each article begins with a standard definition of the term in Elizabethan times, then identifies where and how it is used, and often includes references to biblical passages or religious writings.
