Benedetto Marcello’s Cassandra (1727) is a large-scale dramatic cantata for solo alto voice with unfigured basso continuo for the harpsichord. Unpublished during Marcello’s lifetime, the cantata was nevertheless one of Marcello’s most popular; it describes the events of the last years of Trojan War, as told by the prophetess Cassandra.
