Schrab and Boszhart offer this catalog of eleven rock art sites in Wisconsin and Minnesota. The authors take turns in commentary, with Boszhart introducing each site from an anthropological
perspective drawing archaeological evidence, semiotic analysis, and early ethnographies of local Native tribes. Schrab’s comments come second, discussing her impressions from an artistic
perspective and displaying watercolor interpretations of the art. In between chapters, short essays feature Native American voices reflecting native rock art, its cultural and personal
importance to them, and how they are affected by respectful and disrespectful treatment of the sites. The book closes with the primary authors discussing the history of vandalism and subsequent
conservation efforts, as well as revealing their inspiration and writing process, including their solicitation of Native Voices essays to replace the perspective lost when a third collaborator
of Native heritage was not able to complete the project with them. An appendix briefly summarizes cultural prehistory of the upper Midwest tribes and a list of suggested further reading is
