Experiencing Theatre

In a textbook for an undergraduate course in fundamentals of theater or in theater appreciation, Fletcher and Irelan explain the steps needed to move a play from script to stage. They present many exercises to help students learn the mechanics by doing them. Their topics are what theater is; playwriting and types of plays; designers and the scenographic imagination; performer, director, and production dramaturg; seeing and writing about live theater; and outreach. The high price of most such textbooks discourage many students from taking the course, they say, so they have kept their book deliberately affordable.
