This guide explains the diagnosis and treatment of children and adolescents experiencing dissociation due to trauma. It draws on the Star Theoretical Model and its five theories of attachment,
neurobiology, developmental theory, family systems, and dissociation, and it emphasizes the importance of attachment, the family, and developing internal awareness, cooperation, and
participation in resolving traumatic experiences. It describes warning signs; overlapping symptoms with more commonly known diagnoses and how this can lead to misdiagnosis; assessment; and
treatment aspects, including treatment principles, the treatment process, identifying and stabilizing self-states, calming the stress response and managing triggers, the use of medication,
dealing with traumatic memories, creative art therapy interventions, integrating dissociative treatment with EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapy, and integrating the
