This history of the activist anthem traces the origins of the song to the American South in the early nineteenth century, the significance of the song to the U.S. labor movement during the
1930s and 1940s, the song’s adoption by the African-American civil rights movement, and its translation by Mexican-American activists. The second part of the book analyzes the dissemination and
adaptation of the song through a networked infrastructure of social justice movements across several countries. A companion website contains photographs, videos and other supplementary
