Enriching Practice in Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Classrooms: A Guide for Teachers and Teacher Educators

Ponte and Higgins present a professional development model that is a result of the Malihini (newcomer) Project, which addressed the needs of in-service teachers and staff working with English language learner students in Hawaiian schools. Central to the approach are specific professional learning goals articulated by the teachers studied. These goals were to learn more about the cultural backgrounds, linguistic needs, and funds of knowledge of their English language learner students, and to develop instructional approaches that enhance their content learning and language development.
