Researchers and theorists have questioned the validity of Western-centric conceptions of mental health and called for attention to cultural variations worldwide as well as within specific
countries (e.g., racial and ethnic variation in United States).The purpose of this Handbook is to present children’s perspectives on psychological well-being using data from the 15
participating sites. The book chapters provide a review of research on children’s mental health from international perspective, describes the multi-site project, and presents findings from each
site and a cross-site analysis that addresses universal and unique cultural contributions. The book concludes with discussion of children’s mental health in the context of international child
rights and implications of the research for practice of mental health professionals and educators.
