In seeking models for urban development in the US, say Tomalty and Mallach, most people point to Europe, but they themselves find that European cities are so different from American cities that
the comparison is more aspirational than practical. They look instead to Canada, where the cities generally fall somewhere between Europe and the US in terms of livability and sustainability.
Their topics include Canada and the US: similar yet different, differences in urban form and transportation systems, social polity and a more inclusive society, growing sustainable suburbs.
