In their 2013 Word Nerds: Teaching All Students to Learn and Love Vocabulary, Overturf, Montgomery, and Smith described the strategic, intentional vocabulary plan they had developed and implemented in their elementary school classrooms from kindergarten to grade five. Here they show how to apply the same principles and tools in middle school to give students an appreciation for learning new words in preparation for high school. Their adaptations included recognizing how middle school students are different physically, emotionally, psychology, and socially from elementary students, and also the different divisions of time in middle school.
