Peterson presents an edition of Bharavi’s court epic poem with facing pages of Sanskrit and English translation. She explains that the poem is celebrated as one of the five masterpieces of the
court epic genre, and tells of the hero Arjuna’s combat with the god Shiva in the guise of a hunter, an important episode in the Forest Book of the Mahabharata. Bharavi appears to have
flourished in south India some time after the celebrated Kalidasa in the fourth to fifth centuries but earlier than the seventh century, she says. Annotation ©2016 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR
