Based on papers presented at the conference Emerging Markets and Multinational Enterprises, held in Boston, in September 2014, the 18 essays in this volume explore the opportunities, challenges, and rise of multinational enterprises in emerging economies, addressing the interaction between emerging markets and foreign and home-grown multinational firms, the rise of home-grown multinationals in emerging economies and their challenges when entering developed markets, and strategies foreign multinationals have adopted in emerging economies. The first section consists of an essay by the PWC Strategy & Eminent Scholar in International Management on international and intranational business, as well as two essays by others on his contributions to strategy and international business. In the second part, business scholars from Europe, the US, South America, and India discuss the process between pro-market reforms in home countries and the transformation of domestic firms into emerging economy multinationals, the implications of “Go Global” policies in China for local state-owned and private firms, how external and internal sources of knowledge influence innovation outcomes in an emerging economy, how knowledge-intensive foreign direct investments impact local innovative arrangements in emerging economies, and institutional development and agency conflicts in emerging markets in terms of the governance of international joint ventures in China. Others address the sources of competitiveness and multinationality among Chinese and foreign multinationals and Chinese domestic firms, corruption experienced by foreign multinationals in an emerging market, upgrading and catch-up by firms, the internationalization of the Indian pharmaceutical industry and emerging economy state-owned firms, the international operations networks of emerging country multinationals during different historical periods, outward foreign direct investment, and the foreign entry decision process.
