Defining monsters as mythical hybrids with human parts or aspects that endanger or show antipathy to humans, Lowe explores how Latin poetry during the Augustan period represented such
creatures. He pursues two recurrent themes: gender stereotypes whether male or female, and established norms in conflict with new thinking. The specific conflicts that he addresses in detail
are reason versus excessive emotion, fantasy versus rationalization, and convention versus novelty. He discusses monster theory, real monsters, feminine exteriors, feminine interiors,
beast-men, and hyperbolic monsters. Annotation ©2015 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
