Focusing on rural development, Van Assche and Hornidge look at many approaches to development and consider the rural in its global aspect. They note the multi-functionality of rural areas,
particularly over the last hundred years, and look at developmental options, consider the role local and expert knowledge can play, and cite the importance of governance and what has gone
before. Thirteen chapters are divided into three parts: empirical issues and theoretical orientations; traditions of applied expertise for rural development; combining and concluding.
