Echols and Pennypacker present this primer on building stormwater management systems to be artistic, environmentally integrated, and provide ancillary benefits to the public. The first section
discusses the historical gray-water approach and the reasons that a greener and prettier approach is now gaining popularity. Parts two and three discuss the complementary issues of amenity and
utility. Amenity functions of education, recreation, safety, public relations, and aesthetics are discussed as potential design priorities. The utility discussion highlights the basic function
of each element in old stormwater systems and offers a palette of green infrastructure elements that can be used to improve each functional unit, ending with a list of overall design axioms.
The final part examines twenty case studies evenly split between the amenity design priorities discussed in part two. The case studies are selected from nine states across the U.S., with
