This collection of Walt Whitman’s journalism encompasses his early years as a part-time journalist between 1838 and 1841; his work as a full-time newspaperman and editor from 1842 to 1848; and
the transition period from 1848 to the Civil War as Whitman moved from journalism to poetry. The pieces are arranged thematically in sections on democracy and politics, moral suasion, and the
arts, with pieces arranged chronologically within each section. The final section collects Whitman’s short pieces offering observations on people, the city, and his travels, ranging from 1839
to 1865. These pieces illustrate how Whitman developed a personal voice that was more than reportorial and that sought to offer immediacy and a shared experience. Annotation ©2015 Ringgold,
