The kernal of the book is based on Yang’s year of ethnographic fieldwork in a Tuva and Kazakh community in Uyghur, and the generalization and comparative perspectives based on the work of Ryan
and Zhang. Together they show how small populations of minority cultures in China are gaining viability as they become of interest to tourists. Among the topics are social conflict and tourism
