Three French and eight English articles analyze the process of Indian independence from the British Empire beginning with the rise of independence movements before World War I through formal independence and partition in 1947 to the war between India and Pakistan in 1971. Among the topics are Arthur Griffith’s Sein Féin movement and non-violent resistance in India, emotions in the making of Pakistan and the decolonization of British India 1937-47, unanticipated catastrophe in Bengal during the 1940s, and the 1971 secession of Bangladesh and its international consequences.
