Having previously translated Kabir’s songs from the Sikh holy book, Dass here translates the songs of the other saints from it, written by Hindu and Muslim devotional writers of north India
between the 12th and the 18th centuries. The songs provide Sikhism with a prehistory that reaches back to the down of north Indian Bhakti and Sant traditions, and comprise a ground on which
Sikh gurus laid the foundations of their faith. The extensive notes are in the back matter, leaving the poems themselves easy to read. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
