Rutkowska (English, Adam Mickiewicz U., Poznan, Poland) summarizes findings of her research into the variation and consistency level in the orthographic systems of book printers in Early Modern
English. The Kalendar of Shepherdes is a comprehensive compendium of prose and verse texts of various length and on a variety of subjects including astronomy, astrology, agriculture, medicine,
and religion. It is a good source of information about printers’ orthographic systems, she points out, because the editorial changes are introduced by the printers and publishers themselves, so
there is no question of an author’s influence. Among the topics are orthography and corpus linguistics, abbreviation as an interface between typography and orthography, the reduction of
homography, and etymological spelling. There is no index. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
