Since 1980, political developments in modern Turkey have had a profound effect on both the business world and the economy in general. These in turn have been influenced by changes in the roles
of religion in society and cultural modernization. This work looks at topics such as the influence of the thinking of Karl Polanyi, the actions of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and
its competitors, the role of international associations on economic development and cultural change, the changing role of religion in Turkish government, capital accumulation in the business
world, the role of business associations in politics, and polarization at the local level. At the same time it is impossible to ignore the ongoing polarization between Islam and secularization.
