A century after World War I, this collection of seven plays reflects on the Great War, its significance and changing attitudes towards warfare in that time. Four of the works included date from
the war years or their aftermath. Those are: Night Watches by Allan Monkhouse (1916), Mine Eyes Have Seen by Alice Dunbar-Nelson (1918), Tunnel Trench by Hubert Griffith (1924), and Post-Mortem
by Noel Coward (1930, performed in 1944). The other three plays have the perspective of time and historical and political bite added by that distance. They are Oh What A Lovely War by Joan
Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop (1963), The Accrington Pals by Peter Whelan (1981), and Sea and Land and Sky by Abigail Docherty (2010). The playwrights are all British, except for Dunbar-Nelson,
who was American. In his introduction, the editor reviews each play. Annotation ©2014 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
