Scholars of linguistics and the English language explore corpus linguistics focusing on English for special purposes (ESP) settings, that is, contexts where English is used by specialists in
professions or academia to communicate with their peers or in asymmetrical encounters. Because English is so widely used internationally, they do not confine their studies to the normativity of
native speakers. In sections on methodological issues, corpus-based descriptions, and pedagogical applications, they consider such topics as corpus query techniques for investigating citation
in student assignments, an ESP perspective on the expression of stance in nurse-patient interactions, newsroom jargon at the crossroads of corpus linguistics and lexicography, academic literacy
in Chinese learners of English as a foreign language, and comparing formulaic language in novice and published economics papers. Annotation ©2014 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
