The product of a rich collaboration, this unusual book documents the traditional architecture of 37 ethnic groups in northeast India and offers an intimate tour of the region’s cultures. The
introductory essay is by Blackburn, author of a dozen books on India. Retired architect Kolkman visited the region multiple times in the 1990s to make drawings and take photos that illustrate
in detail the construction and configuration of traditional structures. These are presented culture by culture (alphabetically arranged), along with descriptive text (co-written by the two
authors) that also conveys the experience of visiting the locations, interacting with the local people, and gaining an understanding of how the buildings were built and how they function.
