內容簡介

Melchior and Svensson present contemporary academic information on fashion and museums, past and present, as increasingly world-wide museums pay attention to fashion as a subject for display. There are 12 chapters divided into three sections: the power of fashion: when museums enter new territory; fashion controversies: when bodies become public; in practice. Section 1 presents the evolving history of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, exhibition practices from the 1900s to the beginning of the twentieth century, and fashion photography. Section 2 highlights the challenges of fashion in a museum context, raising questions vis-à-vis gender issues, collecting policies, and the perception of the ideal body. Section 3 is a selection of case studies in developments, challenges, and future directions for fashion in museums as seen from the museum practitioners’ points of view.
