The survey was conducted during 2008, which witnessed the Beijing Olympic Games, rising oil and food prices, the US subprime mortgage scandal, and the American and Russian presidential
elections. The findings are reported in five sections on general questions and questions about Russia, the US, the European Union, and Japan. Specific matters include an understanding of the
international situation in 2008, a higher degree of closeness toward Russia among the Chinese public, the Chinese public’s sources of information about the US, issues with the greatest
divergences in opinion among the Chinese public, the Chinese public’s knowledge of the European Union and Sino-EU relations, and Chinese public opinion on the future of Japan and its role in
