The authors are veteran teachers at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA). This guidebook outlines the approach used to teach voice to acting students at RADA. The approach has a classical
focus, with three years of weekly voice lessons along with spoken voice, movement and acting lessons. Graduates take on major musical theatre roles and learn a skill set to draw on throughout
their careers. The book sets out ideas that aim to develop each student’s individual attributes and to discover his or her own authentic, expressive and beautiful vocal tone, but is not a guide
to any specific singing style or musical genre. The longest section of the book has exercises for working on technique. Included are vocal warmups based in posture, breathing and finding the
natural voice. There is advice on how to work on a song, act through song, choose the best songs and build a repertoire. There are also chapters on using the voice as a musical instrument,
singing in different styles and preparing for auditions. Annotation ©2014 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
