Chopsticks and Gambling

This book explores the complex relationship between gambling and Chinese culture. Lam, an associate professor of marketing at the University of Macau, looks at the history of gambling in China, its place in Chinese culture, and its impact on society and the community. It also discusses the explosive growth of gaming locations like Macau, the only place in China where games of chance are legal, which now surpasses Las Vegas as the world’s largest gaming market. Lam discusses how attempts to curb gambling in China have met with little success historically, and how gaming has become not just entertainment or part of a celebratory event, but a way of life for many, as Chinese nationals increasingly flock to the gaming meccas of Macau and Singapore.
