This volume explores the unlikely mixed genre of noir musicals together. The author begins with examinations of antecedent films and the first definitive musical noir, Blues in the Night. She
then presents chapters on jazz musicals of the 1940s; the advent of "color noir" in the post-war era; the dark musical melodramas of the Cold War 1950s; and the "neo-noir" musicals of later
years, from 1961’s Paris Blues to 2001’s Moulin Rouge. The many films examined are considered in light of historical, industrial, and cultural contexts. Annotation ©2014 Ringgold, Inc.,
