In Native American basketry, the weaver knows that the design creates itself as it is woven and that basket making is less about the physical creation of the basket and more about the prayer
that is given to Creator and the plant for its gift of life. Likewise, Woven Identities goes beyond physical appearances to examine each basket’s creator, history, and purpose, in addition to
the five elements of basket weaving: materials and construction techniques, form, function, design, and ornamentation. The baskets featured within these pages currently reside in the Museum of
Indian Arts & Culture, which consists of about 1,500 baskets from the Southwest, Great Basin, Plateau, California, Northwest Coast, and the Arctic. Annotation ©2015 Ringgold, Inc.,
