By examining semantic changes in English from the 12th century to the 17th century, Crespo demonstrates how the relationship between a term and the concept or external reality to which it
refers changes in parallel with changes in society and the role of individuals within prevailing culture. She begins by introducing the linguistic and historical environment of the Middle Ages
and the Renaissance, then examines the sociolinguistic situation in terms of certain social factors and the influence of foreign linguistic strata on the development of the English language. In
the third part, she shows how the social factors and linguistic changes reflect each other during the subsequent six centuries. Annotation ©2014 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
