Robbins (literature, Texas Christian U.) and Pullen (history, emerita, Kennesaw State U., Georgia) introduce Arnott (1873- 1963) as a Protestant missionary who wrote of her travels and foreign
mission service in Angola. In narratives which first appeared in Mission Studies, she blends perceptions of her experiences with the movement’s representation of itself to gain the support of
sponsors competing for white, middle-class women’s attention. The volume includes information on mission publications’ editing of Arnott’s writing, biographical sketches of other missionaries
who worked in Portuguese West Africa under the auspices of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, and notes about the illustrations in her book. Annotation ©2012 Book News,
