Winstead (humanities and arts, U. Georgia) delves into the history of song in American collegiate life, tracing the various social, political, and community-bonding roles different types of
singing have fulfilled. The book is organized by time period, starting in the colonial era beginning in 1636 and ending with the last half of the twentieth century through the present. Across
this timeline, the progression is charted from religious singing, through songs linked to student organizations, official college songbooks, glee clubs and athletics, and the gradual diffusion
of song away from the center of college life. Forty-five black-and-white illustrations are included and indexed at the front of the volume, and a song index is provided in addition to the
subject index. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
